The Egyptian Goddess Nut was the goddess of the whole Sky. It was from this name, that the modern English word, "night" was derived. Several myths exist that describe the manner in which how the day and night formed. One myth, that is shown in this papyrus, described how Nut, the sky, gave birth to the Sun every morning. Then, as the day continued, the Sun passed over Nut's body, until she finally reached her mouth at sunset. It was at that point that the Sun entered Nut's mouth, and travelled through her body, until he came forth from her vagina the following morning, to repeat the cycle once again.
